Louisville

Bourbon, horses, and Muhammad Ali

Louisville, Kentucky sits on the Ohio River at the traditional boundary between North and South, and it has always embodied that in-between quality. Home to the Kentucky Derby — the oldest continuously held sporting event in the country — it's also the birthplace of Muhammad Ali, a global bourbon distilling hub, and a city with an increasingly celebrated food scene. Churchill Downs, the Louisville Slugger factory, and a walkable NuLu arts district make it more layered than its mid-size reputation suggests.
